5 Tips for Maintaining Healthy Skin

Simple habits that protect, nourish, and strengthen your skin daily

Your skin is the body’s largest organ—and just like the heart or lungs, it deserves proper care. Yet, it’s often overlooked in daily routines. In honor of National Healthy Skin Month, now is the perfect time to re-evaluate your habits and adopt a few key practices that support radiant, resilient skin.

Below are five dermatologist-recommended tips for maintaining healthy skin year-round.

1. Apply Sunscreen Every Day

Sun protection is the single most effective way to prevent premature aging and reduce your risk of skin cancer. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher—rain or shine. Don’t forget commonly missed spots like your ears, neck, and hands.

2. Drink Plenty of Water

Hydration starts from the inside out. Drinking enough water flushes toxins, keeps your skin cells plump, and helps maintain elasticity. Aim for at least eight cups daily, and more if you’re active or live in a dry climate.

3. Cleanse Consistently, But Gently

Washing your face twice daily is essential, especially before bed to remove oil, dirt, and makeup. However, be mindful of your skin type—those with dry or sensitive skin may benefit from gentle cleansers and less frequent washing.

4. Exfoliate Wisely

Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and allows your products to penetrate more effectively. Choose a method that suits your skin type—physical scrubs or chemical exfoliants like AHAs or BHAs—and limit it to 1–3 times per week to avoid irritation.

5. See a Dermatologist Regularly

A consistent skincare routine is important, but professional input is just as crucial. Dermatologists can detect issues early, tailor advice to your needs, and help you stay ahead of any long-term concerns.

“Healthy skin doesn’t require a complicated regimen”

Healthy skin doesn’t require a complicated regimen—just a few thoughtful, consistent habits. From sunscreen to hydration and regular checkups, these five foundational tips can help you achieve clearer, stronger, and more youthful-looking skin.
